TRIBUTE SPEECH
written and presented by Sophia Young, Trinity College, Washington, DC

History is indeed made up of significant events, which shape our future and outstanding leaders who influence our destiny. "I Say a Prayer for Me: One Woman's Life of Faith and Triumph" written by Stanice Anderson.

Stanice Anderson was a lively, talented girl who grew up in a seemingly perfect upper-class home, raised in the Nations Capital as the daughter of a councilman, hits the proverbial rock bottom before growing "up"! Unresolved pain drove her into a nightmare of addiction and abusive relationships. At seventeen Stanice got started on drugs and sampled everything available after that. At the age of thirty-four, Stanice found herself sitting in front of a mirror with a hypodermic needle in her hand, searching for a viable vein. From the television playing in the background, she heard someone saying God loved her. This stranger's voice became her epiphany, her wake-up call and how she slowly began her arduous journey to reclaim her life.

In a wrenchingly honest memoir, "I Say A Prayer for Me" - One Woman's Life of Faith and Triumph - In this book, Stanice tells of her inspiring journey, interweaving passionate prose, brutally honest descriptions and prayers. The events, which took place in and around her life, were earth shattering, for they represent that which was hostile and quite different from life, as others would see it. Stanice's contributions in her memoir place her in a catapulted position. Her life has become instrumental in helping many realize and rectify those unspeakable flaws that will tarnishing their being through the tools God has planted within her as a woman of discipline, substance and honesty.

Women with similar backgrounds needs a Stanice Anderson, but above all the Universe needs her. The significant qualities of this woman's story cannot be underestimated nor taken for granted. Within a span of 18 years of being clean and sober she has been able to expound, expose, and extricate many of her wrongs. Her tactics involved personal growth through an intimate relationship with God. It was the right prescription for her and it was right on time. Hope is waning on the part of many, but Stanice Anderson's "I Say a Prayer for Me" provides a candle along with a light. I Say a Prayer for Me also provides a road map so that all can locate and share together in the abundance of God's restorative power.
I honor Stanice Anderson because she has showed me the way to mend those broken fences and to move on in building myself rather than destroying myself.

Thank you Stanice for being the drum major who was able and ready to offer reflections on your past and the prayers that got you through your darkest hours as you continuously deliver a message of inspiration and hope to our nation through God's love and peace.
