March 5, 2003 -- Read some of these latest releases that capture
the female experience, focus on great Black woman in "herstory"
or help you celebrate the woman you are while helping you become
the best woman that you can be this Woman's History Month.
Wrapped in Rainbows: The Life of Zora Neale Hurston by Valerie
Boyd (Scribner, Jan. 2003, $30). An amazing and intriguing biography
of an author whom many of today's greatest female writers (Toni
Morrison, Maya Angelou, Alice Walker) credit as being their "literary
foremother." Boyd delivers fascinating details of Hurston's
life along with never-before-seen photos of Hurston. Hurston's
life, including looks at her upbringing, social circles and sexuality,
are captivating as is Boyd's retelling of how Hurston died in
poverty - finding success, including her literary masterpiece,
"Their Eyes Were Watching God," only after her death.
I Say a Prayer For Me: One Woman's Life
of Faith and Triumph by Stanice Anderson (Warner/WalkWorthy, 2002,
$21.95). An uplifting story of self-renewal, self-discovery and
spirituality, Anderson tells of her devastating decline -- from
the depths of her heroine addiction and overdose at work -- and
how her life subsequently fell apart in the aftermath. How she
pulls herself together through her faith in God, drug rehab programs
and help from loved ones, is truly a remarkable and compelling
story, but most of all, it is inspirational and triumphant.
A Song Flung up to Heaven by Maya Angelou (RandomHouse, Dec.
2002, $23.95). This book completes the six volumes of autobiographies
that Angelou started 30 years ago with her book, "I Know
Why the Caged Bird Sings." Chronicling her life from 1964
when she returns to the U.S. from Ghana to work with Malcolm X,
it gives a vivid account of the assassinations of two most influential
Black leaders through her first-hand experiences. Ironically,
this last book ends where her first book begins - she sits down
at the table to write the first lines of "I Know Why The
Caged Bird Sings."
